It’s been a long time coming, but Terraria’s 1.1 update is almost upon us. What’s new in Terraria 1.1? Developer Redigit posted a long list of features from the official forums:

Hard mode

39 new monsters

4 new bosses

222 new items

Three new NPCs

An NPC housing interface

Pressure Plates and Pumps

A new lighting system

Additionally, Terraria is receiving another Christmas themed update on the 15th along with a boxed copy of the game being published by Head On Games.

Honestly, I can’t wait. I loved Terraria when it was first released but grew bored of it when I completed everything there was to do. I’ll be jumping back into this on December 1st.

1.1 is a free update for everyone who owns Terraria. If you don’t, what are you waiting for? Terraria is available on Steam for $9.99 (€7.38) and is currently $4.99 (€3.68) during the Steam Autumn Sale.

Black Friday madness continues!

Black Friday madness continues! Origin has entered the fray with their one day only holiday sale which, surpringsly, rivals Steam’s Autumn Sale. Origin is offering 50 percent off a large selection of games. However, the usual catch of “newer games don’t apply” isn’t in effect here. Some of the highlight deals include:

Battlefield 3 – $29.99 (€22.67)
Batman: Arkham City – $24.99 (€18.89 and only a week old!)
The Sims 3: Pets – $19.99 (€15.11 and a great addition to the Sims franchise)
Various sports games such as Madden, FIFA and NCAA
Need for Speed: The Run – $29.99 (€22.67, and still too much)

Remember, this sale is one day only — Battlefield 3 is exclusive to Origin so this might be the best deal you see on it for some time.

Halfway through the Steam sale, Valve continues to bring us the deals.

Halfway through the Steam sale, Valve continues to bring us the deals:

Back to the Future: The Game – $9.99 (€7.55)
Patrician IV – $6.79 (€5.13)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena – $4.99 (€3.77)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – $24.99 (€18.89)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – $4.99 (€3.77)
Sanctum – $2.49 (€1.88)
Space Marine – $33.49 (€25.31)
Serious Sam HD: Double Pack – $2.99 (€2.26)
Dead Island – $19.99 (€15.11)
Grant Theft Auto IV – $4.99 (€3.77, with other games in the franichse 75 percent off)
Flight Control HD – $1.24 (€0.93)
King Arthur Collection – $16.00 (€12.09)

What’s worth it? Dead Island is a steal at $20 combining first-person melee combat with hordes of zombies. I loved Flight Control HD; at $1.24 its a great little timewaster. King Arthur is a brilliant game and includes all of the DLC as well. Deus Ex, one of my picks for GOTY, is also a steal at $25. Serious Sam HD includes remastered versions of First Encounter and Second Encounter for only $3.

I’d avoid Space Marine; 33 percent isn’t that much of a discount for what you’re getting, in my opinion.

And so continues the Steam Autumn Sale.

And so continues the Steam Autumn Sale. Twelve more games slashed to ridiculous prices. Without further ado, since I know you are all too busy gorging yourself on turkey and stuffing to have your time wasted:

L.A Noire: Complete Edition – $24.99 (€18.78)
VVVVVV – $1.24 (€0.93)
Sniper: Ghost Warrior — $5.99 (€4.50)
Total War Mega Pack (Every game except Shogun 2) – $12.49 (€9.38)
Two Worlds 2 – $13.59 (€10.21)
Monkey Island Bundle – $5.09 (€3.82)
Fallout: New Vegas – $4.99 (and all DLC is 75% off as well at $2.50 per DLC) (€3.75, €1.87)
Rift – $7.50 (€5.63)
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum – $10.19 (€7.65)
Red Orchestra 2 – $19.99 (€15.02)
Flashpoint: Red River – $11.24 (€8.44)
Zeno Clash – $3.74 (€2.81)

What to recommend? Well, today’s deals don’t seem quite as awesome as yesterday’s. However, I definitely recommend New Vegas for $5 and all of the DLC. VVVVVV is an amazing game, especially for the price, Zeno Clash is an interesting take on first person shooters and the Total War Mega Pack is a fantastic deal for anyone looking to get into the series.

L.A Noire is a great deal for someone who has yet to play it, as well — though if you’ve played it on the consoles, just skip it.

It's easy to get caught up in the daily deals during the Steam Autumn Sale. After all, who doesn't love big discounts on hot new games?

It’s easy to get caught up in the daily deals during the Steam Autumn Sale. After all, who doesn’t love big discounts on hot new games? However, some of the very best games by the best developers can be had at low prices right now without even waiting for a daily deal. These five games are so addicting, don’t be surprised when the Autumn Sale ends and you didn’t even notice.

In the spirit of Black Friday, with prices so low you’d have to crazy not to buy anything, here are five of the best indie games under $5. Don’t let the price tag fool you — the amount of content for the price is nothing short of mind-blowing, with most games offering additional content for free down the line.

These games are presented in no particular order — each one is great in its own way. An added bonus: each game is significantly under $5, but 5 Under $2.50 doesn’t have a good ring to it.

01. The Binding of Isaac – $2.50

Isaac in the fetal position crying under the title says a lot about this game: it is hard, you will die often, but damn is it fun. Part shooter part RPG part rougelike, this game is brought to you by one half of the glorious Team Meat, Mr. Edmund McMillen along with Florian Himsl. Sporting the same amazing art style as Super Meat Boy. (Can you tell I was a huge fan? So was the rest of the staff.) The Binding of Isaac offers an unbelivable amount of content for $2.50. With a game world that is changing each time you begin again, not to mention the free content added to the game regularly, this is a must-have title. Just clear out some room under your desk when you eventually crawl into a fetal position and cry.

As a bonus, for 50 cents more you can own the soundtrack, composed by Danny Baranowsky. As an additional bonus, this game is a Steam Play title and will work on Macs as well as PCs.

02. Breath of Death VII / Cthulhu Saves The World -$1

You may have already seen our news post about this fantastic JRPG-styled bundle of fun earlier, where we mentioned both of these games are a steal for $3. Now priced at $1, this should be your first purchase. While both games are great, the real star of the show is Cthulhu Saves The World, in which you must play as the classic evil monster Cthulhu as he attempts to… become a true hero. At 50 cents a piece, each game costs the same as a bag of potato chips from a vending machine. But while that bag eventually comes to an end, leaving you with high sodium and feelings of guilt (we’ll eat it anyway), this bundle from Zeboyd Games only leaves you with a sense of satisfication and laughter.

03. Dungeons of Dredmor – $2.50

Unlike The Binding of Isaac, Dungeons of Dredmor is a pure rougelike and is brought to you by Gaslamp Games. However, for those of you not into crushing defeat, Dredmor offers some respite in the form of save points, no permadeath and setting the difficulty lower. Of course, for the authentic experience, you can still avoid saving, enable permadeath and scale the difficulty up as high as it can go in your attempt to pass the first floor. Dredmor offers a few other staples of the RPG genre that you don’t see in most roguelikes, such as custom character creation. The real star of the show is its humor; Dredmor is not a game that takes itself seriously.

Throw in constant free updates and the fact that it is also a Steam Play title means that for $2.50 you can afford to avoid the crowds of Black Friday and explore Dredmor instead.

04. VVVVVV – $2.50

No indie list would be complete without a tough as nails platformer, so without further ado I present to you VVVVVV by Terry Cavanagh. VVVVVV is described on the Steam site as being “minimalistic,” which to me translates to something you’d see on the Atari or Colecovision. Not that this is a bad thing; the game looks wonderful with the minimal assets provided. The music, provided entirely in chiptune by Magnus Palsson, is wonderful as well. VVVVVV is a pure platformer; much like Super Meat Boy, success rests in your own skills. If you’re longing for some old school platforming and an adrenaline rush, your $2.50 is best spent here instead of that can of Red Bull; especially because the Red Bull doesn’t offer any platforming challenges.

05. Jolly Rover – $1.25

This blurb is brought to you by Spencer, who couldn’t get enough of this game when she played it:

In an age where good point-and-click adventure games have seen an unfortunate decline, Brawesome makes an awesome, braw title to the genre in the form of Jolly Rover. Starting off as a jovial — you might say jolly — rover delivering some goods, you are taken hostage by canine pirates and lose out on plenty of coin when the mayor refuses to heed your warnings. This game features some of the old-school adventure characteristics you might have missed from the days of The Secret of Monkey Island, including points that keep track of your progress and needing a creative mind to get past certain parts. (Just a note: The peppercorn is my favorite item in the entire game.) For $1.25, you can get this Steam Play game and earn sixteen simple achievements while enjoying the quick-witted dialogue and glorious graphics.

(Make sure to mention its a Steam Play game)

Have you heard about Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World?

Have you heard about Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World? If you are an Xbox 360 gamer, probably not, as Microsoft banishes its indie games to the deepest pits of the home menu. If you are a PC gamer, then chances are good you’re well aware of both games, having been featured on many popular blogs, such as Rock Paper Shotgun.

Both games, borrowing heavily from the classic JRPG formula with a brand of unique humor all their own, were two of the very best games released on the Xbox Live Indie Games. However, the sales numbers wouldn’t reflect this: According to Zeboyd Games’ website, only 55,000 copies of Breath of Death VII were sold since April 2010, with 20,000 copies of Cthulu Saves The World being sold since December 2010.

In a brilliant move, Zeboyd Games released both games on Steam on 13 July 2011 and has sold 100,000 copies in under four months, placing them in a position of financial security:

” We are ecstatic at the amount of success we’ve seen since releasing our games on the PC. The days of worrying over whether or not we could support our families while making games we would want to play ourselves are behind us. Counter-intuitive though it may be, there is obviously a definite audience for quality console-style RPGs that are aggressively priced on the PC.

We are very appreciative of all the support we’ve received from our fans and from Steam and hope to continue making quality games at low prices for you to enjoy for years to come.”

Zeboyd Games is hard at work on Penny Arcade Episode 3 and both Chthulu Saves The World and Breath of Death VII are bundled together for only $3 (€2.24) on Steam. It will probably be the best $3 you’ve ever spent, so get to it.

The traditional Steam Autumn Sale is upon us!

The traditional Steam Autumn Sale is upon us! Hundreds of games at discounted prices as well as 12 games whose prices have been slashed even further. The sale runs November 23rd to the 27th with the daily games changing at 10 am PST.

Todays list of games is:

Men of War: Vietnam – $8.74 (€6.53)
Portal 2 – $10.19 (€7.61)
Test Drive Unlimited 2 – $4.99 (€3.73)
Risen – $14.99 (€11.20)
Dejobaan Collection – $9.99 (€7.46)
The Oddboxx (All Four Oddworld Games) – $3.74 (€2.79)
Call of Duty: Black Ops – $29.99 (€22.42)
Renegade Ops – $7.49 (€5.59)
Sam and Max: Complete Pack – $12.49 (€9.33)
Mass Effect 2 – $4.99 (€3.36)
Orcs Must Die! – $3.74 (€2.79)
Duke Nukem Forever – $6.79 (€5.07)

A motley crew of games if I do say so myself. What is worth buying?

Orcs Must Die is a steal at $3.74 for a recently released game. I personally enjoyed Risen, I’ve heard Renegade Ops is fantastic, Men of War: Vietnam is a great addition to the series and the Dejobaan collection are a great set of indie games. Naturally, Portal 2 and Mass Effect 2 are steals if you don’t already have them.

Avoid Black Ops — this game wasn’t even worth $30 six months ago, let alone now. For $30, you could buy at least 8 other games during this sale that far surpass it.

My sincerest apologies for the dry title; I wasn’t able to find a good enough pun to lead this article with. Digging its way onto Steam? Even now, nothing comes to mind.

But that’s besides the point; Cave Story+ is now available on Steam, with the first week price being $8.99 (€6.35), and the price thereafter being $9.99 (€7.47).

I know what you’re thinking: “But wait a minute, Cave Story? Isn’t that the game I already played on the PC for free, or maybe even on the Wii and the 3DS?” Well, yes, you’re absolutely right. However, Cave Story+ features a new level, the Wind Fortress, 75 Steam achievements, the ability to play on either the PC or the Mac, as well as the promise of “future content updates.”

I’ve yet to play a Cave Story game all the way through, so perhaps this will be the one where I do that.
