Yes, another PSP Mini. This wouldn’t come across as a Mini though. At 67MB it is technically a Mini, but with 100 levels of fun, and great replay value this game could easily have a much longer value than full games. The game isn’t an original. You knew that was coming, didn’t you? Like most Minis, it is either an iPhone or PC game clone, and this time it’s PC/Arcade classic Breakout, but revamped. I don’t think this has it’s own iVersion, but don’t quote me on that.
When I started the first level, I noticed they’ve cleverly designed. The idea is simple – you have a paddle, which shoots balls upwards at the breakable boxes, and as the ball descends, you must place the paddle under the balls so it won’t hit the ground. Great.
I press X which shoots the ball up, and sends it falling to the left of the paddle. So I direct my analogue stick in the corresponding direction and the paddle accelerates so fast across the screen it’s surreal. The controls immediately come across as tricky.
After a couple of levels of insane controls from the analogue stick, I decide to try D-pad. So the ball begins to fall, so I hit the right d-pad button. The paddle slowly moves to the right. When I say slow, I mean nearly still. There is no balance in the speed.
Once the ball is set loose it will interact with everything. The boxes, walls and any objects on the screen which will divert it to a completely new direction. Again, the paddle suddenly becomes frustrating due the the fast responses needed.
The levels are creative and nicely thought through. Each one (as mentioned above) has obstacles and such, but they don’t prove to be irritating, but more of a giddy annoyance. You’ll find people looking at you on the bus because of a grin that will spread across you’re face when the ball descends to the ground due to a last minute diversion.
I would recommend this right now, but be prepared for some tricky controls. Overlooking this you’ve got a great game with original levels and entertaining features which will last a long time because of the long list of levels and great replay value.
